Storms threaten northern India as Delhi logs four-year October rainfall high

Delhi has recorded its highest October rainfall in four years. The reported milestone does not include a rainfall total.

India’s weather outlook remains unsettled, with thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain forecast across parts of the north, including Punjab and Haryana.

Hailstorms are also a risk in northern areas and the Himalayan states, raising the prospect of disruption to daily life.

Gusts of up to 50 kilometres per hour could damage trees, power lines, temporary shelters and standing crops in affected regions.

In the south, conditions are becoming favourable for the northeast monsoon to begin. Heavy rain is possible in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Coastal Karnataka, Konkan and Goa are among the regions where high temperatures and uncomfortable humidity are expected to persist despite the changing weather.

Farmers have been advised to drain fields, secure harvested produce and protect vulnerable crops, and to schedule harvesting when conditions are favourable.
