Manchester United fall 3-0 to Bournemouth as Carrick faces growing pressure

Manchester United lost 3-0 to AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result that left Michael Carrick’s side 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone. The defeat extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions.

AFC Bournemouth, the visitors from the south coast of England, scored through Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson. It was the third time in four seasons that Bournemouth have won by a three-goal margin at Old Trafford. United were outworked and struggled to turn possession into dangerous attacks.

United registered five shots on target but did not create a clear-cut big chance. They are averaging 1.3 goals per game this season, a shortfall that has added to mounting frustration with both the squad and the club’s tactics.

The result has put Carrick’s position under serious scrutiny. Club officials had already been weighing alternatives before the Bournemouth match, and the defeat is expected to accelerate that process. Any decision rests with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, who will make a recommendation to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Carrick has not been confirmed as dismissed.

Captain Bruno Fernandes remained on the bench throughout the match after criticising Carrick’s tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. Carrick said his decision to leave Fernandes out was “purely football” driven. The choice backfired as United failed to find a response against Bournemouth.

The losing run has exposed problems beyond the manager. Experienced United players, including Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot and Bryan Mbeumo, struggled to make an impact. Since the 2023-24 season, United have also recorded more home defeats by three or more goals in all competitions than any other Premier League side.

Manchester United, one of English football’s most decorated clubs, have fallen well short of their past standing since their most recent league title 13 years ago. Their immediate concern is the table: at 16th, they are only a point clear of the relegation zone. Carrick’s future remains unresolved as the club considers its next step.
