Real Madrid recover from 3-1 down to beat Roma 4-3

Real Madrid came from two goals behind to beat Roma 4-3 in the Champions League in Rome, turning a 3-1 deficit into a late victory.

The win came in the second round of the competition. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said his side had known it needed to win, but its mistakes had allowed Roma to score three times.

Courtois said Real Madrid lost possession cheaply before Roma’s first two goals, which came on counterattacks. He also pointed to a deflection on another goal.

Real Madrid responded with three goals from set pieces, Courtois said. The comeback was still alive after Endrick made it 3-3.

Antonio Rüdiger scored the winning goal late in the match, completing the turnaround for José Mourinho’s Real Madrid side.

For Courtois, the result reflected the team’s refusal to give up after falling behind. He said the players believed they could still win, even at 3-1 down.

Roma had played well and put Real Madrid under pressure, Courtois said. The late finish gave the visitors the victory, but left the goalkeeper acknowledging how costly his team’s errors had been.
