Patrick Stewart, the British actor whose career spanned Shakespearean theatre, Star Trek and the X-Men films, died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 28. He was 86. A statement shared on his social media said he was with his wife, Sunny, and had experienced a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Stewart became widely known to television audiences as Jean-Luc Picard, the Starfleet captain at the centre of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The role made him a defining face of the franchise and introduced his commanding voice and measured presence to viewers around the world.
He reached another generation of moviegoers as Professor Charles Xavier, the leader of the mutant team in the X-Men films. His work across both series helped make him familiar far beyond the theatre audiences who had followed his earlier stage career.
Before those screen roles, Stewart was closely associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company, performing classical parts including Shakespeare. The company called him one of the finest classical Shakespearean actors of his generation and said his contribution was beyond measure. He remained connected to the company and Stratford-upon-Avon throughout his career.
Stewart’s stage and screen work brought major honours and nominations, including two Olivier Awards and a Grammy Award. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2010 for services to drama. The range of his career—from Shakespeare to science fiction and superhero films—helped his performances reach audiences across different ages and countries.
Tributes followed news of his death. Star Trek actor William Shatner said Stewart “stood for the best of us,” while Hugh Jackman, his fellow X-Men actor, called him one of the greats of stage and screen. The Royal Shakespeare Company described him as a “colossus of both stage and screen.”
The family statement said Stewart died in the loving care of Sunny and was surrounded by family and friends, music, prayer, tears and laughter. Flowers are due to be placed on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The statement did not provide details of funeral arrangements.
