Fleetwood-Arsenal Carabao Cup tie halted by drone

EDIT: The game finished 1:1.

Fleetwood Town’s Carabao Cup match against Arsenal was stopped for more than eight minutes after a drone flew over Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood, Lancashire. The interruption came while Arsenal were preparing to take a free-kick, with one minute and 40 seconds played.

Referee Michael Salisbury spoke with staff and players on both benches as police investigated. The drone flew away just as players were about to leave the pitch, allowing play to resume with 10 minutes on the clock. It later fell in a nearby housing estate. Seven minutes were added at the end of the first half because of the delay.

The interruption came in a high-profile cup night for Fleetwood, a League Two club and the lowest-ranked team left in the competition. The Carabao Cup is England’s knockout league cup; a place in the quarter-finals is at stake for both sides.

Fleetwood struck first through Loupalo-Bi, according to the live match update. Arsenal drew level when Ceadach O’Neill sent a dangerous ball into the penalty area and Viktor Gyökeres bundled it over the line after missing his first kick.

Fleetwood then scored again through substitute Adam Phillips. He won the ball back, played a one-two with Jake Beesley and shot from around 20 yards; the effort took a deflection off Lucca Mendonca and went into the top corner.

Those updates establish goals for both teams, but the match was still being played and no final result had been confirmed. The quarter-final draw is due after Wednesday’s remaining matches, so Fleetwood and Arsenal still have to settle who advances.

For Fleetwood, the tie brings a fourth-tier side into the spotlight against Arsenal, one of English football’s best-known clubs. The drone stoppage briefly put the match on hold, but the teams returned to the pitch and the cup contest continued.
