Sri Lanka chase 430 to beat England after Harry Brook’s record double

Sri Lanka chased down England’s 429-4 in Rawalpindi, reaching 430-8 to win the ODI by two wickets. Janith Liyanage hit the winning six in the final over.

Harry Brook made 202 from 116 balls for England, the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket. It was the first double hundred by an England batter in the format.

Brook’s innings helped England post their fourth-highest ODI total. He shared a partnership with Joe Root, who scored 69, before Will Jacks added an unbeaten 66.

Sri Lanka’s chase began badly, with two wickets down inside the first five overs. Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake steadied the innings with a 166-run stand for the third wicket.

Fernando scored 97 from 83 balls, while Rathnayake made 130. Their partnership kept Sri Lanka within reach of the target.

Dasun Shanaka then added 133 runs with Rathnayake in 79 balls. Shanaka scored 97, and Liyanage finished the chase with an unbeaten 61.

The chase was the second-highest successful run chase in men’s ODI history, behind South Africa’s 438-9 against Australia in 2006. England, the team representing England and Wales in international cricket, were left with a record-breaking innings but no victory.
