What’s happening with CJP protests in Delhi

Delhi Police and paramilitary forces detained protesters on Saturday as the Cockroach Janta Party’s planned demonstration brought barricades and heavy security to central Delhi. Police had refused permission for the rally at Jantar Mantar.

Hundreds of people were detained during the anti-government demonstration. A video shared by the CJP showed its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, being detained alongside other leaders shortly after arriving in the capital.

After Dipke’s detention, the protest baton was handed to CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde.

The Cockroach Janta Party is a youth-based satirical political movement. It began in May after India’s Chief Justice compared some unemployed young people to cockroaches, a remark that gave the movement its name.

As security measures spread, youth organisations shifted demonstrations to places including the Safdarjung flyover, Dilli Haat and Raj Ghat, as well as makeshift detention centres in north-west Delhi.

Central Delhi was sealed with police deployment and barricades. Metro stations, schools, colleges and markets remained closed, while loudspeakers announced restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

The specific demands of the CJP demonstration and Dipke’s status after his detention remained unclear.
