Padres beat Brewers 4-3 to force Game 4

The San Diego Padres stayed alive in the National League Division Series with a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 at Petco Park. The victory cut Milwaukee’s series advantage and forced a fourth game.

San Diego built a two-run lead, but the Brewers kept answering and made the game a one-run fight through the final innings. The Padres’ win took 3 hours and 22 minutes in front of 47,708 fans.

The Padres were without closer Mason Miller, who was away for the birth of his first child, and reliever Adrian Morejon, sidelined by a sore shoulder. That left the bullpen plan uncertain after starter Nick Pivetta handed the game over.

Michael King, a starting pitcher who had opened Game 2, took over to record the final six outs. He walked two batters in the ninth, putting the tying run in scoring position.

Christian Yelich hit a hard ground ball toward Xander Bogaerts, and the Padres shortstop turned it into a game-ending double play. The play preserved San Diego’s 4-3 lead.

Game 4 is next, with Walker Buehler named to start for San Diego. Milwaukee had not announced its starter in the available update.

The win came after the Brewers had taken the first two games in Milwaukee, both after trailing. San Diego now has another game at Petco Park to try to extend the series.
