Aston Villa end Manchester City’s perfect start with 2-1 win

Aston Villa beat Premier League leaders Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park in Birmingham, with Nicolas Jackson scoring both goals. The result ended City’s perfect start to the league season and lifted Villa to sixth place.

Villa came into the match seeking their first home win in the Premier League this season. Three straight victories in all competitions had helped build confidence, and Unai Emery’s side began with an aggressive approach that unsettled City.

Jackson opened the scoring after a defensive mistake by Marc Guehi gave the Villa striker room in the penalty area. He turned away from a defender and finished sharply, punishing City for a loose touch at the back.

City had chances to respond before Erling Haaland levelled after the break, heading in a cross from Iliman Ndiaye. It was a reminder of the threat posed by the league leaders, who looked capable of taking control after drawing level.

Villa restored their advantage through Jackson, whose second goal followed a cross from substitute Ibrahim Mbaye. The finish came after Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to keep out Jackson’s first-time shot, giving the home side the lead again.

City pushed for another equaliser. Haaland came close late on, but Ian Maatsen cleared his goal-bound header, while Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki had earlier denied Rayan Cherki and tipped Josko Gvardiol’s effort onto the bar. Villa’s defensive work helped them see out the win.

The victory gives Villa a significant result against the team that started the match top of the table, while City’s unbeaten run is over. Villa’s climb to sixth follows a run of strong results in all competitions; the match itself establishes the final score, but does not settle how either side will fare over the rest of the season.
