Turkey lose 4-1 to Italy as pressure grows on Vincenzo Montella

Turkey were beaten 4-1 by Italy at the Timsah Arena in Bursa, and the result quickly turned the atmosphere against Vincenzo Montella’s side.

Italy went three goals up before the half-hour mark, with Alessandro Bastoni scoring after nine minutes before Davide Frattesi and Michael Kayode added two more. Turkey pulled one back through Barış Yılmaz shortly after the restart, but Pio Esposito restored the three-goal cushion almost immediately.

The home crowd responded with loud whistles, chants for Montella to step down, and anger aimed at the Turkish Football Federation. Merih Demiral, the Turkey captain, later apologised and said the team was ashamed of the performance.

Montella, the Turkey head coach and a former Roma and AC Milan striker, said he was not thinking about leaving. He said he felt the support of the players and remained motivated to continue.
