World Space Week 2026 puts the “Rocket Revolution” in focus

World Space Week 2026 is underway from Oct. 4 to 10, with “Rocket Revolution” as its theme. The annual event focuses on space science and technology and their contribution to life on Earth.

The week is coordinated by the World Space Week Association with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Events take place internationally.

On Oct. 6, Google marked the week with a Doodle featuring a new image of the Rosebud Nebula, also known as NGC 7129. The image was made from observations by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

The nebula is about 3,300 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. Webb’s infrared instruments can see through dense clouds of gas and dust that obscure parts of the region.

That view reveals protostars and stars at different stages of formation. Earlier NASA observations identified roughly 130 young stars in the nebula.

The image released on Oct. 6 draws on Webb observations from December 2025. At its centre is LkHα 234, a pre-main-sequence star estimated to have about five to eight times the mass of the Sun.

The week’s theme also points to changes much closer to home: the expanding use of machines in space, from satellites orbiting Earth to telescopes studying distant regions of the universe. The satellite age began with the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik 1 on Oct. 4, 1957.
