Cyclone Arnab puts Andhra Pradesh coast on alert ahead of expected landfall

Very severe cyclonic storm Arnab brought light showers to northern Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, as high waves and strong winds affected the coast at Visakhapatnam. The storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, but its precise path and movement remain uncertain.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the latest forecasts pointed to impacts from Srikakulam south to Krishna district. Earlier projections had suggested the effects could reach Bapatla; later assessments indicated a more limited southern reach. Naidu spoke after reviewing the state government’s preparations at Undavalli.

Arnab was about 859 kilometres southwest of Kolkata, with sustained winds reported at 213 kilometres per hour. The storm was forecast to strengthen before reaching the coast near Kakinada, though models differed on whether it might stall before or after crossing land. That uncertainty leaves coastal authorities watching for changes in the forecast.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked states to monitor conditions and take precautionary measures. Its advisory covers Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Telangana and several other states and territories. It urges people in coastal areas to move to safer places, advises residents to stay indoors and calls for fishing operations to be suspended.

Rail services have also been disrupted. Authorities cancelled 64 services scheduled for October 27 and 28: 53 passenger and other services on the coastal Andhra Pradesh network, along with 11 express and special trains linking Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The cancellations are intended to reduce risks from forecast heavy rain and strong winds.

For people along the coast, the warnings affect daily travel and work at sea as well as shelter plans. The ministry has advised people to avoid waterlogging-prone areas and says travel by motorboat and small ship is unsafe. It has also asked railway and road authorities to regulate traffic carefully and urged fishermen to follow marine warnings from the India Meteorological Department.

As of Tuesday, the available updates describe preparations ahead of the storm rather than a completed landfall. The timing is expected to be Wednesday, but the path could still shift, and forecasts differ over how the storm will move near the coast.
