Tom Skerritt, ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Picket Fences’ actor, dies at 93

Tom Skerritt, the actor who played Mike “Viper” Metcalf in Top Gun and Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences, has died at 93. His family said he died Wednesday of natural causes in Seattle.

Born Thomas Roy Skerritt in Detroit in 1933, he served in the U.S. Air Force before pursuing acting. His film career began in 1962 with War Hunt, alongside Robert Redford.

Skerritt’s breakthrough came as Army surgeon Duke Forrest in Robert Altman’s 1970 Korean War comedy M*A*S*H. He went on to work across film and television for six decades.

In Ridley Scott’s 1979 science-fiction film Alien, Skerritt played Dallas, captain of the spaceship Nostromo. Seven years later, he appeared opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun as the Navy flight instructor known as Viper.

On television, he starred as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the 1990s drama Picket Fences. He also played Evan Drake, a love interest for Rebecca Howe, in the sixth season of Cheers.

Among his other film roles were Shirley MacLaine’s husband in The Turning Point and the family patriarch in Redford’s A River Runs Through It.

Skerritt also co-founded TheFilmSchool in Seattle, an organization created to support emerging filmmakers and storytellers.
