Oklahoma stuns No. 1 Texas with last-play field goal

Oklahoma beat No. 1 Texas 27-24 in the Red River rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, with Tate Sandell kicking a 47-yard field goal on the final play. The win lifted the Oklahoma Sooners to 3-2 and left the Texas Longhorns 4-1.

The Sooners had trailed by 10 before rallying. Texas quarterback Arch Manning threw three touchdown passes, but his two interceptions proved costly.

Texas had a chance to take the lead late, but Gianni Spetic missed a 53-yard field goal wide right with 1:55 remaining. Oklahoma then went three-and-out for the seventh time in the game.

With 19 seconds left, Manning’s final pass was intercepted by Courtland Guillory, giving Oklahoma the ball at its own 39-yard line.

John Mateer then completed passes of 13 and 20 yards to Isaiah Sategna. Both catches were upheld after replay reviews, setting up Sandell’s winning kick.

Oklahoma managed touchdowns on special teams and defense despite its offensive struggles. Sandell had also made a 53-yard field goal earlier in the game, though he missed another from that distance.

The loss does not rule Texas out of the College Football Playoff picture. One forecast put the Longhorns’ chances of reaching the playoff at 66.8%, while noting that a difficult schedule remains: four of their next five games are against teams expected to be ranked in the Week 7 AP poll.
