Nigeria rally from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Russia

Nigeria’s Super Eagles fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw 3-3 with Russia in their international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.

Kelechi Iheanacho put Nigeria ahead in the 10th minute, scoring on his return to the national team after a pass from Abdullahi Bewene.

Russia replied through Lechi Sadulaev and Matvey Kislyak to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Alexey Miranchuk extended the hosts’ advantage to 3-1.

Nigeria’s squad had been depleted by player withdrawals, and coach Eric Chelle made changes as his team tried to get back into the match.

Peter Edokpolor, making his senior international debut, pulled one back in the 78th minute, eight minutes after coming on.

Akor Adams levelled deep in added time, finishing a fast break after substitute Umar Abubakar set him up. Abubakar had come close to scoring himself shortly before the equaliser.

Chelle said a tactical change involving his strikers helped Nigeria score twice in transition. He praised the team’s state of mind after it had fallen behind.
