Nigeria marks 66 years of independence as Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu speak on unity
Nigeria is marking its 66th Independence anniversary on October 1, with President Bola Tinubu using his address to say the country has moved past years of economic difficulty and is entering an age of prosperity.
In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to stay united and committed to building the country. He said Nigeria had faced difficult times since independence in 1960, but had also recorded moments of progress.
Sanwo-Olu said the country’s diversity should be seen as a strength, and that the work of building a united Nigeria belongs to both the present generation and those who come after it.
His message came as Tinubu’s independence speech drew criticism from Solomon Dalung, a former minister of youth and sports, who called it empty, wishful and disappointing.
Dalung said the speech should have spent more time on the government’s concrete results and on problems such as insecurity, agriculture, the economy, unemployment, hunger, poverty and foreign policy.
