Messi leads Inter Miami past New England in 2-1 comeback

Inter Miami came from behind to beat New England Revolution 2-1 at Gillette Stadium, with Lionel Messi scoring the winner in the 83rd minute. The victory moved Miami into second place in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference and guaranteed the club a place in next season’s Concacaf Champions Cup.

New England took the lead in the 53rd minute through Dániel Gazdag, after a forward run by teenager Peyton Miller. Inter Miami had been held scoreless in the first half, but Germán Berterame brought the visitors level with a header in the 69th minute.

Messi then collected the ball centrally, got past midfielder Brooklyn Raines and drove a low shot into the corner from about 15 metres. It was his first goal after a brief two-game scoreless stretch, and it settled a match in which second place in the East was at stake.

New England appeared to equalize late, but a goal in the 87th minute was ruled out for offside after a video review. The decision preserved Miami’s lead and all three points. The result leaves Inter Miami on 59 points and New England on 58, with both clubs having played 33 league matches.

Inter Miami is a Miami-based club in MLS’s Eastern Conference. The 2026 campaign is its seventh season, and the team is playing its first year at Nu Stadium after previously using Chase Stadium. The Champions Cup berth gives the club a place in a continental competition alongside its remaining league commitments.

For New England, the defeat ends a chance to take second place from Miami before the final round. The Revolution remain third in the conference table, while the win gives Inter Miami a stronger position heading into the postseason. Second place also carries playoff advantages, making the result important beyond the standings alone.

One regular-season match remains before Decision Day next Saturday, when the final playoff places will be decided. Inter Miami now has its Champions Cup qualification secured; the clubs’ league positions and postseason paths will be shaped by the last round.
