Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Erling Haaland scoring twice. The win kept City at the top of the Premier League, six points clear.
Phil Foden put City ahead with a low finish after Jeremy Doku created the opening. The goal ended Foden’s 23-game run without scoring.
Ipswich responded through Daizen Maeda just 155 seconds later. Zian Flemming also scored for the visitors, but City found the goals to hold on.
Haaland scored in each half and was denied a hat-trick by VAR. He has scored 12 times this season and reached 100 Premier League non-penalty goals faster than any player before him.
The result made Enzo Maresca the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games. Ipswich, who had spent much of the match defending deep, could not contain City’s attack.
City fans brought inflatable bananas to the ground, reviving a tradition associated with the club since the 1980s. The display came amid scrutiny of the club following a guilty verdict over financial-rule breaches.
There were injury concerns after the final whistle: Haaland and Antoine Semenyo limped off, while Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly were also hurt. Maresca said he was unsure how serious the injuries were.
