Phil Foden hat-trick leads Manchester City past AEK Athens 5-1

Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1 in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick in a convincing home win.

Erling Haaland was left out, and 17-year-old Floyd Samba deputised for City. The result showed the hosts could find goals without their leading striker.

Elliot Anderson opened the scoring in the 12th minute, steering in the rebound after Enzo Fernández’s free-kick. It was Anderson’s first goal for the club.

Foden scored three times, with Rico Lewis assisting his first two goals. It was Foden’s first hat-trick since April 2024.

City pressed hard in the first half, registering 10 efforts on Alberto Brignoli’s goal. Allan struck the crossbar, while Rayan Cherki also came close.

AEK’s Stavros Pilios pulled one back early in the second half. Cherki restored City’s two-goal cushion five minutes later, and Foden’s third ended any prospect of a comeback.

Foden had scored against Ipswich at the weekend after a long wait for a goal. He said he was “going in the right direction,” while adding that he still had a long way to go.
