Liverpool rally from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3

Liverpool beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on October 20 after falling two goals behind in their Champions League match. The win was Liverpool’s third in a row in this season’s league phase.

Villarreal took the lead in the fourth minute when Georges Mikautadze scored after a poor Virgil van Dijk header. Sergi Cardona finished a flowing move for the visitors’ second, putting them 2-0 ahead.

Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back with a header from a Kostas Tsimikas corner. Rio Ngumoha then created the equaliser, sending in a ball that Ronald Araujo headed in at the far post.

Ngumoha, an 18-year-old Liverpool forward, was central to the turnaround. His movement and one-on-one runs unsettled Villarreal’s defence and helped lift Liverpool after a difficult first half.

After the break, Ngumoha opened space for Mac Allister to score his second and give Liverpool the lead. Florian Wirtz added a fourth with a left-footed finish.

Tani Oluwaseyi scored late for Villarreal to make it 4-3, leaving Liverpool to see out a tense finish. The result came after the Spanish side had led by two goals.

Ngumoha, aged 18 years and 52 days, became the youngest Liverpool player to score or assist for the club in the Champions League. He did not score, but assisted Araujo’s equaliser and helped set up Mac Allister’s second.
