Wicknell Chivayo and wife killed in Zimbabwe helicopter crash
Wicknell Chivayo, the Zimbabwean businessman known as Sir Wicknell, and his wife Lucy Muteke have been killed in a helicopter crash in the Marondera rural area, about 70km east of Harare.
Police said the aircraft came down on Wednesday evening with six people on board. Zimbabwean authorities said there were no survivors.
Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths of the 43-year-old businessman and his wife to state broadcaster ZBC. He said the family was devastated by the tragedy.
The helicopter was traveling from Gandami in Chikomba, where the couple were building a rural home, and crashed at Kudenga Farm about 40 minutes after take-off. The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and police said investigations were under way.
Chivayo was the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe and had become a public figure through lavish displays, close ties to African presidents, and government contracts that drew scrutiny. He had denied wrongdoing in relation to his business dealings.
