Inter Miami beat D.C. United 4-0 as Messi scores twice

Inter Miami defeated D.C. United 4-0, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez each scoring twice in the MLS match.

Suárez opened the scoring in the third minute, finishing with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box. German Berterame set up the goal.

Suárez added a second in the 39th minute, again assisted by Berterame, to give the Miami side a two-goal lead at half-time.

Messi scored in the 47th minute, converting a pass from Suárez to make it 3-0. He struck again in the 60th, getting past three defenders before finishing.

The brace came in Messi’s first match after he said farewell to Argentina’s national team. Four nights earlier, he had scored in what was described as his final match for the Albiceleste, against Benin.

Messi, 39, entered the match as MLS’s leading point producer, with 23 goals and 13 assists. The victory improved Inter Miami’s record to 13 wins, five losses and 10 draws, moving the club from third to second in the Eastern Conference with 49 points.

It was only Inter Miami’s second win in its previous 11 league matches. The club is the defending MLS champion and plays in the Eastern Conference.
