Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou in El Clásico, ending Barcelona’s perfect start to the La Liga season. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including the late goal that settled the match. Barcelona remain top, but their advantage over Real Madrid has been cut to three points; Madrid are third in the standings.
The result stopped Barcelona’s run of nine wins from their first nine league matches. Hansi Flick’s side had been chasing a tenth straight victory, which would have set a new club record for the start of a league season. Instead, the defeat gives the title race a different shape after ten games, with Atlético Madrid also in contention.
Madrid went into half-time ahead, but Barcelona responded after the break. Raphinha drew the hosts level, and Barcelona looked capable of completing a comeback before Mbappé struck again. The contest was played in front of 62,055 fans, who saw a close, high-intensity match between two of Spanish football’s fiercest rivals.
El Clásico is the name for meetings between Barcelona and Real Madrid, clubs based in Catalonia and Madrid respectively. Their rivalry runs through La Liga and other competitions, and draws a global audience well beyond Spain. In the league, the result matters immediately: a Barcelona win would have put them nine points clear of Madrid, while the visitors’ victory leaves them close enough to challenge.
Mbappé’s two goals made the difference for José Mourinho’s Madrid. Mourinho praised his team’s organization and courage in playing out from the back against Barcelona’s press. He also argued after the match that João Cancelo should have been sent off for a second-half foul on Yan Diomande, saying a VAR review had missed a clear red card. That decision did not change the final score.
Barcelona had to adjust at right-back after Xavi Espart went off injured in the first half, with Eric Garcia and Jules Koundé already unavailable. Alejandro Balde came on and Cancelo changed flanks. Those changes added to the challenge for Flick’s side, although Barcelona recovered well enough to equalize and put pressure on Madrid before the decisive goal.
The standings now leave Barcelona with a three-point lead and Madrid in third place after the Clásico. The defeat ends Barcelona’s clean opening run, but does not remove them from the top of the table. Madrid have gained ground, while Atlético’s presence in the title race keeps the pressure on the leading sides as the league continues.
