Eva Marie Saint dies at 102

Eva Marie Saint died on October 6, 2026, at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102 and was surrounded by family and loved ones; her death was attributed to natural causes.

Saint won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her film debut as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 drama On the Waterfront. Edie is the moral center of the story and the love interest of Marlon Brando’s dockworker.

Five years later, Saint played Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller North by Northwest. The role made her a screen icon, pairing poised glamour with a character whose intentions remained uncertain.

Her work also showed a quieter range. The film Loving was among the performances that revealed her subtlety beyond the cool, elegant persona associated with Hitchcock’s film.

Saint began her career in live television in the late 1940s. She later won an Emmy for playing Lil Van Degan Altemus in the 1990 television drama People Like Us.

She was married to television director and producer Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years, until his death in 2016. Their children are Darrell and Laurette.

Saint retired from acting in 2014. In 2024, she said she still enjoyed walks outdoors, watching baseball—especially the Los Angeles Dodgers—and spending time with family and friends.
