Auburn stuns No. 1 Georgia with last-second field goal

Auburn beat No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on Oct. 17 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, with Alex McPherson’s field goal as time expired. The unranked Tigers ended Georgia’s nine-game winning streak in the rivalry.

Georgia, the Bulldogs’ football team, opened with a 14-0 lead. Auburn then scored 24 straight points, taking a 24-14 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs cut into the deficit with a field goal, then put together a 13-play, 94-yard touchdown drive to tie the game.

Auburn’s next three possessions ended in punts, leaving Georgia with a chance to take the lead. But quarterback Gunner Stockton fumbled near midfield with 58 seconds remaining.

The turnover put Auburn in position to win. Three personal fouls against Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown, including one in the final seconds, helped move the Tigers into range for McPherson’s kick.

Georgia’s mistakes also included three turnovers and a blocked field goal. The Bulldogs had led early, but could not recover after Auburn seized control in the middle of the game.

The win was Auburn’s first over a top-ranked opponent since 2017. For Georgia, the 27-24 home defeat came after last week’s win at Alabama.
